Murda in Tennessee

I was born in Tennessee, famous for its Volunteers
I was forced to embrace dirty people and drive them from their fears
I was surrounded by liars and thieves and the people who they led astray
I wish I could give 'em all directions home but I don't know what to say
I picked up what I got in my hands so I wouldn't have to talk
whenever I needed to be alone I could take it with me and walk
I guess this old guitar could probably tell you more about me at the end of the day
Sometimes I try to let it speak for me but it doesn't know what to say
The most beautiful girl that I ever met, she never speaks a word
she alters herself for no one else or buy new things that shes heard
her feelings are always honest and true but she can change them if she may
I wanna tell her how I love her so much but I don't know what to say
My best friend had a big ole heart and he gave it all to me
I don't know why he had to go, to me it's a mystery
how someone that you need the most can just be taken away
I asked him about in a dream one time but he didn't have much to say
Another friend of mine, she broke down when she saw the way things are
she always tried to hide reality but I guess she let it go too far
she said, "life and death are just a game but it sure is fun to play..."
I asked her to explain the rules but she didn't know what to say
Been up all night and I'm weary as hell, cats got my tongue
I wish that things were simple and fun like the days when we were young
But now I'm so weak I can't even speak, don't even have the strength to pray
I ask God to answer me, I guess he don't know what to say

American Love

Walking down the street I was offered every kind of love
they got Swedish love, French love, but no American love
like soda, in glass bottles, we don't make it anymore
the only place to find American love is in American stores
American Love
American Love
So buy it up, as much as you can, 'cuz it's on sale all the time
and why stop at two or three when you could buy eight or nine
but the more you got, it seems to me, the less it really means
and now you can get a two for one deal on the American dream
American Love
American Love
Gone! Like good radio, cheapened over the years
and now the songs I love are over-played so much that they bore me to tears
but those songs were worth more to me than American gold
but you can download them all for free with that American soul
American Love
American Love

My River

I was driving down besides the river
looking for a place to stay
somewhere to get through the cold December
write down my memories and fade away
Am I tough enough? (I don't know)
Do I care too much? (does it show?)
Am I good enough for you?
And I'm sure
that you've heard it all before
but that just goes to show
what you don't know
I met a man down by that river
and he gave me a place to stay
played all the songs he couldn't remember
cleared his head and went away
He wasn't tough enough (and it showed)
He cared too much (it got old)
He wasn't good enough for you
And I'm sure
that you've heard it all before
but that just goes to show
what you don't know
You'll never understand my river
and you'll never hear what it has to say
but me and that river will keep on rolling
keep on riding 'til I get to where I'm going!
Am I tough enough (I don't know)
Do I care too much (does it show?)
Am I good enough for you?
And I'm sure
that you've heard it all before
but that just goes to show
what you don't know
